Obituary of Edward James Doughty

Please share a memory of Edward to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Edward James Doughty, known affectionately as Jim, was born in Manhattan to the late Jean and Edward Doughty. He resided in Paramus and Central Jersey before settling in Nazareth, PA, in December of 2005. Jim was a proud United States Marine, serving our country honorably during the Vietnam Era until his discharge in 1976.

Jim dedicated much of his life to helping others. He worked as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor for the VA, retiring in May 2025. Jim was immensely proud of his more than 30 years of sobriety. He drew from his own experiences with addiction and mental health to offer compassion and guidance to others. He was passionate about supporting fellow veterans on their journey to healing and recovery.

In his younger years, Jim enjoyed playing Little League baseball with his father and played drums in a band during his teenage years. Above all, Jim adored his mother, Jean, and cherished the bond they shared. He had a deep appreciation for classic rock music, especially “Let it Be” by The Beatles. Jim was an avid gun collector and enjoyed American history.

Predeceased by his parents and brother, Gary; surviving are his wife of 20 years, Mary Doughty; two stepsons, David Perkowsky and John Perkowsky; siblings, Laurie, Scott, Kevin and Glen; extended family and friends.

A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2025, from 12:00 to 3:00 PM at the McCriskin-Gustafson Home for Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ 07080. Memorial services will begin at 2:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a veteran’s organization of your choosing, in Jim’s memory.

Jim will be forever missed but always remembered for his kindness, strength, and unwavering dedication to helping others.
