James J. Matula, 17, tragically passed away on Saturday, November 22, 2025, from injuries sustained in a car accident.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, to Kristopher and April Matula, James grew up in the Borough of Middlesex, where he was a proud student and athlete at Middlesex High School. A talented outfielder for the Middlesex Blue Jays Baseball Team, James played an instrumental role in helping lead the team to the Group 1 State Championship this past season.
James lived life with a passion that was unmistakable. Determined, adventurous, and always on the move, he embraced every opportunity—eager to try new things, go new places, and experience life fully. He was excited for the future and had even begun considering service in the United States Air Force.
James deeply loved his family, his friends, and his teammates. He showed kindness to strangers, cared genuinely for others, and made everyone feel valued. People often told his family that James was special—because he was. He carried a heart of gold and radiated love wherever he went.
He enjoyed baseball, hunting, fishing, camping, snowboarding, golf, music, dirt bikes, and, most recently, lifting at the gym.
Predeceased by his maternal grandfather, John Mineo, James is survived by his loving parents, Kristopher and April Matula; his siblings, Taylor and Kris Matula; his maternal grandmother, Sharon Mineo; and his paternal grandparents, John and Dorothy Matula. He will also be forever remembered by his aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends whose lives he touched.
Visitation will be held on Monday, December 1, 2025, from 4-8PM at Our Lady of Mount Virgin Roman Catholic Church, 600 Harris Avenue, Middlesex, NJ 08846.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at 10AM at the same church.
Immediately following Mass, James will be laid to rest at Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains, NJ 07076.
The Matula family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered love, support, and prayers during this profoundly difficult time.
