Obituary of Elmer A. Helmstaedter

Elmer “Al” Helmstaedter, 88, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 12, 2019 at Haven Hospice located within JFK Medical Center in Edison, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Helmstaedter was born in Newark, NJ in 1931. He was a Navy veteran and worked as a machinist following his honorable discharge. He married his beloved wife, Mitzi Helmstaedter, in 1954, and together they raised 4 children. He was a devoted father and grandfather.

He is survived by his son, Michael Helmstaedter, and his wife, Linda, of Piscataway; his daughter Joan, and her husband, Steven, of Pickerington, OH; his son Thomas Helmstaedter, and his wife, Olga, of Fort Worth, Texas; and his daughter Lorraine, of Kunkletown PA. He also leaves behind his cherished companion of “10 good years”, Mrs. Muriel Martino. Mr. Helmstaedter is also survived by his five grandchildren, Amie, Jennifer, Juan, Christopher, and Sara, and his two great-grandchildren, Emelie and Aiden.

He was predeceased by his wife of over 40 years, Mitzi Helmstaedter, in 1999.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2019 beginning 10:00 am followed by prayers and military honors at 11:30 am.

At the request of Elmer's family, cremation will take place privately. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation at parkinsons.org.
