Obituary of Alexandros Alexopoulos

Please share a memory of Alexandros to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Alexandros (Alekos) Alexopoulos, 94, of Middlesex, NJ, passed away at home with his family on Wednesday, December 16th, 2020.

Alexandros was born on April 12th, 1926 in the small village of Karnesi in Peloponisos, Greece, where he spent his youth.  He served in the Greek army for 3 years and later married his wife, Ekaterini, on February 28th, 1954.  They settled in the nearby village of Mazeika (Kato Klitoria), where Alexandros started a mill business and was locally known as “O Milonas.”  He worked hard to acquire more land to grow his beloved walnut trees.

Dreaming of a better life for his family, Alexandros moved his family to the United States in 1970, settling first in North Plainfield, NJ and then eventually setting up permanent residence in Middlesex, NJ in 1976 where he lived until his death.

Alexandros often referred to himself as “the bridge man,” as he built the bridge for his family to cross over to a better life.  Alexandros did not speak any English when he first moved to the United States, and worked as many as 3 jobs at the same time to support his family and save money for his family to have a better life.  He worked in numerous diners, and also at American Cyanamid

After he retired, Alexandros and Ekaterini enjoyed spending 6 months every year at their beloved home in Mazeika, where they enjoyed visiting family.  Alexandros often spent his time in Greece on home projects to build a home for all his family to enjoy and treasure.  In the US, he enjoyed spending countless hours at Bridgewater Mall, finding friends there for coffee, making friends amongst the store staff (particularly at Lord & Taylor and Bloomindale’s), and buying and (mainly) returning countless things.  Alexandros’ main passion was his lawn and flowers.  He took great care and had great pride for them.  Anyone who has ever driven down his street has surely noticed the older man in flannel pajamas tending to his lawn and flowers.  In his final years, Alexandros enjoyed spending time with his beloved great-grandchildren, helping to take care of them.  His great-granddaughter was named after him and in his great-grandson Alexandros got the boy he always wanted, having had a daughter, granddaughters, and a great-granddaughter.  His great-grandson was the apple of his eye in his final years.

Above everything else, Alexandros loved his family and was inseparable from them.  There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for them.  He worked tirelessly to provide the best life for his wife and daughter.  He adored his grand-daughters and great-grandchildren as his own children.  And while he loved to poke jokes at his son-in-law, he loved him as his own child as well.  Alexandros was loud, passionate, dramatic and could drive anyone crazy, but his love for his family was immense and he was loved by all blessed to know him.

Alexandros leaves behind his loving daughter Eleni and son-in-law Konstantinos. He also leaves behind his 2 adoring granddaughters:  Kathy (and her husband Jason) and Maria, and 2 great-grandchildren, Alexandra and John.  He also leaves behind two brothers, Panagioti in Greece and Laki in Australia.  Alexandros is predeceased by his beloved wife Ekaterini, his parents Kosta and Eleni his sister Lola, and brothers Mitso and Yianni.

Visitation will be held on Monday, December 21, 2020 at the Middlesex Funeral Home, 528 Bound Brook Road, Middlesex, NJ 08846 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.  Family and friends may gather on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Piscataway for an 11:30 am Funeral Service.  Burial will follow with his wife at Bound Brook Cemetery in Bound Brook.
