Gene and I sailed together on my second ship in the union in 1977 . He was a friendly face on a ship that didn't have too many of them. I had no idea he was a fellow Kings Pointer. Any Mariners will know that when you are not aware a shipmate was a graduate of the Academy, that often means he's a pretty good guy. I would often see him on the train ride to the union hall , me starting in Somerville and he joining in Plainfield if I remember right and we would sit together and swap sea stories.
A few years before I retired, he showed up at union meeting in NJ and I recognized him right away. I reminded him when we sailed together and as he remembered, he smiled and said "I bet you thought I was dead!" I say this at the risk of offending people but I admire a person who can joke about himself. My own Dad was like that. I told him I was surely surprised to see him but happy to know he was still around. A lot of shipmates have come and gone over a 40 year career and the fact that I remember him after all these years says a lot. He was one of the good guys. I'm sorry for your loss. Steve Meyers, USMMA 1975.

It has been my privilege to be Gene (and Martha's) neighbor for over 28 years. Gene was an amazing, heroic man who served in 3 wars. He was a kind and gentle soul. I will miss him very much. RIP dear Aginso.

We will miss Uncle Gene so very much. He was always caring and concerned that everyone was doing ok. He regularly checked up on my mom his baby sister to make sure she was doing ok , so after she passed I then checked up on him to make sure he was doing ok , and he was. He remembered all of our conversations on each family member and what everyone was up to. He always had some great advice to give during our conversations. I smile when I think of the holiday dinners and Uncle Gene sitting at the head of the table with his smile and laughter. I will truly be forever blessed to have had such an amazing man as part of my family for so long. Forever in our hearts.

My dad loved his big brother and was always thankful that Uncle Gene thought of the Kings Point avenue to help them get educated. My dad always marveled at how good he was at math. I loved that Uncle Gene could always tell me what was happening with my kids because he could manage following their social media better then I ever could. We loved our visits and we will pray for him always. Geraldine Valentino-Smith

Martha and Family,
I have this wedding photo in my office at home. Priceless, and Millie and Jocko are in it also. God rest his soul, he will be missed by all who loved him. He was a kind and gentle man, and great husband and father. And will remember hearing some of the stories of his travels while he was Captain.
