董彦先生于2021年8月8日在爱迪生JFK医学中心不幸去世，享年63岁。
董彦先生生于中国北京，于1990年移居美国，先后和她夫人陈凡女士居住在新泽西Hoboken和纽瓦克，最后于2002年定居爱迪生。
董彦先生自年轻时就酷爱足球运动，曾在北京医学院校队担任后卫，还曾经为此负过伤。后来又将他的技术传给了儿子。
董彦先生曾经在Seton Hall大学攻读硕士学位。他在Hoffmann La-Roche制药公司工作了二十多年。退休以后，他热衷于装修，近年来得到了不少新泽西华人的好评。认识他的人都说他为人正直，大方可靠，聪明手巧。
董彦先生在业余时间里喜欢看武打小说、电影、电视剧和动作片。他也喜欢和家人和朋友在一起，很幽默，喜欢而且擅长做饭，他特别喜欢他的小猫咪“花生”。
为了悼念他的过世，追悼会已定于星期日，2021年8月15日，下午1点至4点举行。

Dear Fan:
Even though it was some time ago-I left in 2010-I remember Yan so well when he was at Roche and afterwards. He was the Kilo Lab’s go-to chemist (although he didn’t have a degree in that field) working on small-scale or large-scale projects-it made no difference to him; I trusted him with the difficult jobs because he was an excellent chemist and more importantly a perfectionist, a quality I know persisted after he left Nutley. And of course, there were the Friday lunches at the hole-in-the-wall Hunan Garden in Lyndhurst. Yan and I would see who could use the most hot chili paste on our food-needless to say, no one could outdo Yan. As a favor, he used to char these very hot small, dried chilies for me-I still have some.
So, it wasn't just Roche. As you well know, we continued to meet for lunch, initially at some Chinese restaurant in New Jersey but then I texted Yan in 2014 (my text messages go back that far) “I will not eat at that restaurant in Harrison” so the following year Yan braved driving into the city where we ate at a somewhat better restaurant. After that it was easier for both of us to meet at the World Trade Center and walk into Chinatown, occasionally when the weather was pretty bad. We always ate at Joe's Shanghai on Pell St whose best dish was or is pork soup dumplings but the rest of the dishes were only so-so and the condiments were not very spicy. Then we would go around the corner to this small coffee bar and talk for a couple of hours. We ate at Joe's Shanghai last year in February with the hope that the onset of COVID would reduce the number of patrons in the restaurant and it would be quieter, but that didn't happen. In January, he wished me Happy New Year and hoped that we would get together again once COVID was under control-I am so sad that will not happen.

I acquainted with brother Yan when I came here to join my husband in January 1993. The first time I met Yan was the first week after I landed in US. He was my first friend from Beijing. The first impression about him was his Pekingese and his humor. We had a lot of jokes about the differences between people from Shanghai and Beijing and how dissonant they are. Brother Yan played a big role in my family. He was our best family friend, our older brother and like a second father to my daughter. We could not count how many dinner and parties we had with him and his family together. Yan was such a great cook and so generous to all of his friends. He gave us immense love we could not ever forget. Brother Yan was so handy and smart that all his friends got favor on. It made me believe that there is not anything he can not fix. We were so heart broken about his sudden leave. Dear brother Yan will be forever living in our hearts and memory. May you rest in peace and gently.

In Memory of Yan
I first met Yan in the summer of 1998 in our longtime friends Jian Pang and Xishun Zhao’s house. He strikes me as a very handsome young man with confidence to take on the world yet very humble and charming. He had been my friend since and will be forever…
Yan, Xishun, and I had a lot of fun doing home improvement projects together in each other’s old houses. We shared a lot of drinks, good or bad cooks (btw, I am the worst among the 3), mishaps, and more importantly the fruits of our success that we enjoyed together. We shared our stories of the good, the bad, the ugly, you name it. That is how I got to know him better as a very intelligent man with integrity, generosity, righteous principle, and loyalty. He was the true brother you want to have who will look after you and your family in a moment of notice. I am so forever grateful that I had two of such brothers. Now I lost one of them, Yan left us in the morning of Sunday, Aug. 8th. I felt part of me was lost since that awful day…
Even though you will be sorely missed by all your families and friends, I am sure you have a wonderful place in heaven to enjoy your afterlife. Rest In Peace, my brother!

I was still a teenager when I first met Yan. He’d just started dating my sister. It was all very exciting. I liked him instantly. He was like the big brother I never had: tall, good-looking, charming, funny, popular, caring, and protective. I always enjoyed going to ballroom dancing with them at Beijing Medical College, where he worked and where my sister Fan studied. Yan was such a great dancer.
Before Yan left Beijing to join my sister in the US, our grandma held his hands tight, tears streaming down her face. “Promise me, you will take good care of Fan!” she said. “I will. I promise. You can count on me,” Yan replied. He did. He is a great husband and a great father—reliable, responsible, conscientious, and consistent. Things are never easy for first-generation immigrants. He worked extremely hard to care and support his family. I’m sure Fan and my nephew Jonathan would agree that none of their success would be possible without Yan’s love, support and hard work. I’m sure our grandma in heaven is very pleased with him as well. I suspect she will be welcoming him with open arms. I bet she would say “Well done you, but why on earth do you come here so early?”
Yan’s sudden departure has deeply saddened all of us in Beijing, especially because we haven’t seen him for quite a few years due to Covid. We are deeply saddened we couldn’t come to the US to see him one final time. But we will be seeing him off virtually. We will wish him a good journey. The separation is only temporary. We will be joining him, our grandma and other members of the family, including our beloved cats, soon enough.
Farewell, Yan! We love you. We will miss you. You will always be in our heart. 再见了, 小彦! 一路走好!

Yan is the most versatile man I have ever known. From home repair, auto repair to gardening and cooking, he enjoys everything he does. He is caring, smart, reliable, not to mention technical.
When I had questions about home repairs, I asked him for advice. He always did follow ups afterwards. When I needed him to do repairs, he always called afterwards to confirm that no new problems came up.
He was the one who helped Joel and me install the greenhouse on the deck. There were many technical challenges during the installation. He solved each problem and completed the installation. If it wasn’t because of him, the greenhouse kit would still be sitting in the crates today.
As a realtor, I manage several rental properties for my clients. Yan is my go-to person for home repairs. Even though I know he worked as a chemist for more than 20 years, he made me wonder whether he was an engineering major in college.
It has been almost a week since I learned his passing. I still can’t accept the fact. Walking around the house, I still remember every single advice he gave me for different issues.
Yan is my close friend, my home advisor, and my handyman. He will be greatly missed by Joel and me.
