I honestly can't remember the first time we met. It happened so long ago but all I know is that it was in first grade in 1988. What I do remember is cracking jokes and sharing video games - sometimes we would pull all nighters playing on his Genesis or my Super Nintendo. We would get so competitive on old school basketball games like "Bulls vs Blazers" or "NBA Jam". Since we were young, Jon has always been a caring person. He was there for most of the ups and downs in my life. It's hard to imagine life without him because he was always there when you needed him. Even now, in the days since his passing, I can still picture him here with our group of friends. I guess it's my way of thinking thats he will always be with us.
From childhood to his final moment I wanted to be make sure I was there for him. While leading him up the aisle during his funeral, along with our close friends and his cousins, I couldn't keep myself from becoming emotional after seeing how many people showed up for him. It reminded me of how many hearts he's touched and the connections he had. I know for sure his smile, his laugh and even his mannerisms will carry on to his children. His spirit will live on with his mom and dad. His strength and love will be carried with his wife Thida, who is one of the strongest women I know.

“Jo-na-tan” (this is how we said it in our family). He and I grew up together. We are actually only a month apart. My earliest memory of him was one Halloween where he dressed up as a penguin and I dressed up as a fairy. Growing up our families (all 30 of us) would always find any excuse to get together on the weekends. We would go to each other’s houses, go out to eat, play outside, go to church, or wait hours on end for our parents to finish playing mahjong. One summer we had to learn hula dances and perform the dances at a nursing home. He was even one of the cotillion dancers for my sweet 16. We would celebrate all of the holidays together eating, laughing, talking, eating some more, and occasionally dancing.
As we grew older, our families also grew (now there’s 50+ of us) and we didn’t get to spend as much time together. “Jonatan” joined the Marines and I moved to the west coast. We would still occasionally see one another during the holidays and I would always say to him, “So, are you done having kids?” It was hard catching up because he was always busy with the kids. It wasn’t until recently when Jonas was born where I found out that “Jonatan” had a thing for penguins. When I asked Thida if she knew why he liked penguins she said it was because of a costume he wore when he was younger. I realized that I have that picture and I’m happy to be able to share that memory with Tiffany, Maxine, Jessica, Dwayne, Ace and Jonas. I see your dad in all of you and I know he’ll always be a part of you.
It was hard saying goodbye but I found comfort in being surrounded by our families and being able to hug and hold each one of your children. We will continue to keep you in our hearts, our thoughts and keep your memories alive. Love you Cuz!

I worked with Jonathan 2nd shift he sat in the cubicle next to me. We would talk about our health working out and nutrition. He was always super nice to me and friendly. He was a super quiet guy low key and didn’t bother anyone. He took his job of helping vets very seriously. I’m very sad to hear about his passing. I will always remember what a nice guy he was and how he loved his family. Rebecca

Q: What will you never forget about Jonathan?
A: I ‘am Jonathan’s God Mother . I had a chance to take care of him when he was just one year old Jonathan was a humble baby and very easy to take care . He was not a demanding kid and not at all attention seeker nor needy. He will just be in his crib playing with small boxes and small sticks . He loves nature and would love to walk to the sand , beach, wild forest and creeks . Where ever he is now . He is in a happy , peaceful place embracing the unconditional love ❤️ of God . Thank you God for giving me a chance to meet one of your angels.

I was heartbroken to hear that Jon was sick and had passed away. I am Thida's cousin but Jon might as well be my own cousin. I am even more saddened that I couldn't be there in person to say goodbye. I will miss him very much. And, if somehow you can see this, Jon: Who knows in this universe, we may see each other again. Safe travels to wherever your spirit is going. Love you brother!

Q: How did you meet Jonathan?
A: I met Jonathan at Thida's home during their Khmer's wedding ceremony. He was so patient, sitting through the ceremony in a different language. He did great. He had a great smile. Their wedding was so perfect. I got to know him through the photos and videos that Thida shared. When I heard that he was in a coma, I couldn't stop crying. God took you too soon Jonathan. We will miss you. May you rest in peace.

Q: What was one of your favorite qualities of Jonathan?
A: Jonathan is a compassionate individual, a proud father, one who smiles whenever he talks about his children. He is a husband who makes his wife feel like she is a wonder woman who can accomplish anything.
A kind and caring individual; the most ideal father a child could ask for; positive person with whom you want to spend time with.

John lived near me in Piscataway and his house was on the way home from Schor Middle School. I remember a few of us would go to his house as often as we could to hang out and practice breakdancing. Looking back, there were many memories and moments we shared that I will never forget. We grew apart as life intended us to take different paths.
There was one thing that Johnathan did that always allowed you to relax and even if for one second, be at peace.... whenever he saw you, you were greeted with sincere happiness and a hug that showed you mattered. We'll miss you bro.

I was devastated to hear of Jonathan's passing. I had the pleasure of mentoring him when he first started at Optum. He was always so friendly and eager to add his contributions to our team. I will forever remember this family in my prayers. My condolences to all who he held dear.

Jon,
No one will ever be so protective the way you were. For as long as I can remember, you always looked out for me like a little sister. Even when I thought you were too much and annoying. With that tough exterior, you loved your family so much. It always came from love. That’s how you showed you cared. I’ll miss your goofy sense of humor, your laugh, your shoulder to lean on but most of all, you. I’ll remember our memories and tell them to Thida and the kids. Your memory will always live on. Watch over us Cuz, I know you’ll always be there. We miss you so much.
Love,
Melissa and Anthony
