Obituary of Donald Eger
Donald Meyer Eger, 85, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 19, 2024, at Overlook Medical Center in Summit, NJ.
Born in Summit to the late Francis and Rosemarie Eger, Don was a graduate of Jonathan Dayton Regional High School. Following his graduation, he worked for Geiger’s Bakery before being drafted into the United States Army in 1961. He proudly served as a Military Police Officer, starting his basic training on Fort Dix in New Jersey, Military Police Training on Fort Gordon in Georgia, and serving as a Military Police Officer at Killeen Base in Texas. Following an Honorable Discharge in 1963, Don went back to work for the Bakery, where he worked his way up to Manager before leaving in 1987. He then went on to work for Warren Township Board of Education, where he retired in 2005 as Maintenance Foreman.
A true family man, Don would do anything for those around him, all you had to do was ask and he was there to help. He enjoyed his time gardening, doing handy work, and loved to go fluke fishing.
Don will be missed for his great sense of humor. His ability to keep a straight face made it exceptionally difficult to tell if he was joking or serious. As he aged, this ability faded, only adding to his humor, being that he was unable to contain his laughter leaving him laughing at himself.
Predeceased by his parents and step-father, Harold Farber, Don will be missed by his wife of 63 years, Lois Susan (nee Furst) Eger; children, Donna Siepmann and her husband Robert, and Denise Armand and her husband Steven. He will also be missed by his grandchildren, Joshua, Matthew, and Rebecca; and siblings, David Eger, Dianne Gjelsvik, and Bonnie Canziani, along with a host of extended relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held at the McCriskin – Gustafson Home for Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ, on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, from 3 PM to 6 PM.
A prayer service will be held at the funeral home beginning at 5:30 PM.
In Lieu of flowers, the Eger family has asked that donations be made to The Popcorn Park Animal Refuge, The Wounded Warriors Project, or St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in Don’s Name.
