Obituary of William J. Smith
Middlesex, NJ – William J. Smith, 66, known to many in town as “Smitty,” died on Monday, March 11, 2024. Born in New Brunswick to the late William and Mary (King) Smith, Smitty has been a lifelong resident of the borough.
Smitty worked in auto body repair, landscaping, with the Middlesex County Sewer Authority and AT&T, eventually retiring from RWJ University Hospital in Somerville where he worked as a painter. Smitty belonged to the Middlesex Fire Department for over forty-eight years, serving with H. C. Pierce Fire Company 3. He enjoyed the time spent with the department and was a driver for the Rescue Squad when needed.
He was formerly active with the Boy Scouts and enjoyed camping with the troops. He liked clamming and boating with his father and enjoyed playing basketball, bicycling, bowling and swimming.
Predeceased by his sister Mary F. Mootz in 2018, Smitty leaves behind his sister Elizabeth Smith-Barth and her husband Craig of NJ, their sons Jordan and Tyler, his brother Edward Smith and his wife Teri of NC and by his brother-in-law Joe Mootz of PA.
Family and friends are welcome to join together at Middlesex Funeral Home, 528 Bound Brook Road, Middlesex, NJ 08846 on Friday, March 15, 2024 from 6pm until 9pm and on Saturday, March 16, 2024 from 9:30am until 10:30am. Concluding prayers and a fireman’s service will begin on Saturday at 10:30am. Smitty will be entombed privately at Resurrection Burial Park in Piscataway with his parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Smitty’s name sent to the Middlesex Fire Department would be deeply appreciated.
