Obituary of John "Joe" Woodring
John "Joe" Woodring, 86, passed away on Christmas evening at his home with his sons by his side after celebrating his favorite holiday.
A lifelong resident of South Plainfield, Joe served in the United States Army following high school.
After receiving his honorable discharge, Joe began working for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Jersey City. Afterwards Joe became a Fireman for the City of Plainfield, dedicating his life to firefighting. During his service Joe suffered a career ending injury. Never one to sit still, Joe became the heart and soul of the Plainfield Police and Firefighter's Federal Credit Union for over 35 years. Good luck to Bernie and Conrad!
In his later years Joe enjoyed spending time with his sons on the golf course. It was safe to say that they each got their money's worth. When not golfing, Joe could be found in his kitchen baking. His family favorites included crumb cake, cheese cake and apple dumplings. Joe had a passion for model railroading. He would begin setting up his holiday train display in August. Joe was always trying new things. After careful research he perfected his vegetable and flower gardens. Recently he discovered a love of hummingbirds and enjoyed sitting outside watching them. Online shopping allowed him to get whatever he wanted with a click.
Predeceased by the love of his life, Nona of 55 years and their beloved son, Kevin (Donna), survived by his beloved sister Elizabeth "Bette" Gratta, beloved sons Christopher (Lorraine), Kelly (Tracey); eight beloved grandchildren and eight beloved great-grandchildren.
Visitation will begin at 4 pm followed by funeral service at 7:30 pm on Thursday, January 2, 2025 in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home for Funerals 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ 07080.
