John F. McNerney
South Plainfield - John F. McNerney, 86, died on Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at his home.
John was born to Andrew and Bridget (McCabe) McNerney in New York City. He grew up in Brooklyn. In 1954 he married Mary T. McEvoy and moved to E. Orange and in 1960 they moved to South Plainfield and have resided here ever since.
During WW II, John served in the US Army and was attached to the 60th Engineers and he had seen battle action in Normandy and in Northern France.
John had worked as a machinist and tool and dye maker for the former Airco Co. of Union before he retired 25 years ago.
He was a member of the AARP 4144 of South Plainfield and the Knights of Colombus Watchung Council 552 . He was also a long time member of Sacred Heart Church in South Plainfield.
John's greatest loves were his family and his faith and in his spare time he enjoyed woodworking and fishing.
He was predeceased by his sister Kathleen Burke and by his brothers Andrew and Vincent McNerney.
Surviving are his wife of 53 ½ years, Mary T. McNerney, his daughters and sons-in-law Kathleen and Gary Harty of Forks Twsp., PA, Denise and Jeff Schreier of Edison and by his sons Kevin McNerney of Ocean Grove and his girl friend, Kim Conner, Eric and his wife, Kate McNerney of Shark River Hills, John McNerney of Ortley Beach and Dennis McNerney of South Plainfield, his five grandchildren, Kevin, Maura, Jonathan and Caitlin Harty and Colleen Schreier and by his sister in law Geneieve McNerney of Red Bank and by his nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will begin on Saturday, August 9, 2008 at 9:15 AM in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in Sacred Heart Church, South Plainfield. Entombment will follow in the Holy Redeemer Mausoleum.
Visiting hours will be held Friday, August 8, 2008 from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the funeral home.
