Robert W. Lyons
South Plainfield - Robert W. Lyons, the loving husband of Grace Roehm Lyons, 90, died peacefully at home in his sleep on Friday, January 25, 2008 surrounded by his loved ones
Born in Newark to Elese and Timothy Lyons, he dedicated his life to the people of Newark. A Newark firefighter for more than 33 years with Truck No.1, Bob retired in 1981. He was a life member of the Police and Fireman's Retirement Association as well as the Exempt Fireman's Association.
Bob Lyons also served his country in WWII with the 8th Air Force and served as Crew Chief on P47's and P51's "Mustangs" with 352nd Fighter Group from May 1942 - Sept. 1945. A technical sergeant, he was stationed overseas in England and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
Continuing his dedication to the Air Force, he proudly served as an original member and on the executive board for the 352nd Fighter Group Association as well as a member of the 8th Air Force Historical Society.
For many years he and his wife Grace, traveled to the reunions throughout the states where they renewed old friendships as well as making new ones.
He was also active in the Plainfield Chapter of Deborah Hospital, the South Plainfield VFW Post 6763, and was also a communicant of Sacred Heart RC Church in South Plainfield for over 50 years.
Besides his parents, Bob is pre-deceased by his brother; Frances Lyons and his sister Ann Lyons Gorman.
In addition to his loving wife Grace (Roehm) of 58 years, also surviving are his dedicated sister Dorothy Lyons of Edison, his children; Robert William Lyons Jr. and his wife Pat of Savanah, GA., Margaret Lyons Ponzio of Watchung and Susan Lyons Bou Chamoun and her husband George of Sergentsville, and his 8 grandchildren; Robert Lyons III, Joseph & Timothy Lyons-Ponzio, Jennifer, Danielle, Aline, Kristine, and Elias Bou Chamoun.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 9:15 AM in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home For Funerals followed by a 10:00 AM funeral mass at Sacred Heart RC Church, South Plainfield.
Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains.
Visitation will be held on Monday, January 28, 2008 from 2-4 & 7-9 PM in the funeral home.
Donations can be made to the charity of choice.
