Obituary of Joseph G. Zekas

South Plainfield - Joseph G. Zekas, 90, passed away on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at The Willows at Holmdel assisted living. Born in Luzerne, PA, Joseph resided in North Plainfield before settling to South Plainfield in 1958.
Joseph was drafted to the US Army in 1945 during WWII and reenlisted in 1946 and 1949 to serve our country during the Korean War. He had many military accomplishments during his time of service, which includes; a Purple Heart, Combat Medical Badge, Korean President's Medal and Distinguished Unit Emblem, four Bronze Stars and an Oversea's bar. Joseph was honorably discharged on June 17, 1952.
A proud veteran, Joseph was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, VFW, 24th Infantry Division Association and Korean War Veterans Association where he continued to support our servicemen and women.
After Joe's military career, he was employed with Lockheed Electronics Company for thirty three years. In June of 1989, he retired as a Senior Engineering Administrator.
As a former Honorary Grand Marshal of the 2003 Labor Day Parade, Joseph was very active in the South Plainfield community and civic organizations, such as the Police Reserves, Polish National Home Director, President of the South Plainfield Senior Citizen's Club, American Legion, VFW and South Plainfield Little League.
He was also active in Our Lady of Czestochowa parish as an usher, he served on the finance committee with the annual Feast of St. Anthony and was a former Holy Name Society's President.
He is predeceased by his wife Dolores who passed away August 22, 2008.
Surviving are his five children; Patricia Ann Loesch and her husband Jack C. of Keyport, Diane Brand and her husband Paul of Toms River, Richard Zekas and wife Diane, Joann O'Keefe and her husband Charles and Joseph G. Zekas Jr. and his wife Sherry all of South Plainfield, three siblings; Mary Ann Swayze, Ronald Zekas and Laurence Zekas, seven grandchildren; Jessica Stieg and her husband Charles, Sara Loesch, Richard Zekas Jr., Lauren Zekas, Christopher O'Keefe, Kyle O'Keefe, Joseph A. Zekas and Nicole Zekas and two great-grandsons Colin and Thomas Stieg.
Visitation will be held in the McCriskin-Gustafson Home for Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ 07080 on Sunday, March 18, 2018 from 2-6pm and on Monday, March 19, 2018 beginning 9:00 am.
Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Monday, March 19, 2018 at 9:30 am followed by a 10:00 am funeral mass at Our Lady of Czestochowa Roman Catholic Church in South Plainfield. Joe will be laid to rest beside his wife at Resurrection Burial Park in Piscataway.
In lieu of flowers, donations sent to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
