Obituary of Charles L. Decker,

South Plainfield - Charles L. Decker, Sr. 89, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 15, 2015 at JFK Medical Center in Edison.

Born and raised in Juniata Altoona, PA, Charlie settled in South Plainfield with his family in 1962.

He served his country proudly during WWII, was stationed in the South Pacific and honorably discharged in 1946.   He was a very proud veteran and was honored to serve his country.

A Union Carpenter prior to retirement, he worked for Engo Company in South Plainfield and was previously employed by David Smith Steel. 

Charlie was very active having volunteered with the South Plainfield Athletic Booster Club and becoming the club’s first life member and the South Plainfield Junior Baseball Club where he and his son, Charles Jr., were the first father- son life members.  He was also active with Ponytail Softball and in 2000 was bestowed the honor as the Grand Marshal of the 43rd Annual South Plainfield Labor Day Parade and in 2003 he was the Grand Marshal of the South Plainfield Junior Baseball Club Parade. Charlie was also a recipient of the prestigious Cappy Award.

He was also well-known as a member of the South Plainfield American Legion Chaumont Post #243 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post #6763.

Charlie will be sadly missed by many, but more importantly, fondly remembered for all his time spent supporting and attending numerous local sporting events for his children, grandchildren, and community youth.  Charlie was also an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates fan.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Lois, three children; John (Mary Beth), Charles (Marianne) and Ellen Decker-Lorys (Stan), and three grandchildren; Charles III, Alex, and Cody.

 Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends, and caretakers.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at 8:30 AM in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ 07080 followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:30 AM in Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, South Plainfield.

Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains, NJ.

Family and friends may attend the visitation hours on Monday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donation in his memory may be made to the South Plainfield Volunteer Fire Department or any South Plainfield Youth Organization.

Charlie’s life was centered around his family and the community of South Plainfield.  He will be missed by all.  Rest in Peace, Pop.
