South Plainfield - John A. Alvenus, 73, died Friday January 29, 2016 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. Born in Brooklyn, NY to the late William and Thelma (Laughlin), he settled to South Plainfield in 1970. John served with the United States Navy as a quartermaster until his honorable discharge in 1965. After retiring from Wall Street where John worked in the back office in the operations department, he worked as a financial consultant for the last 12 years traveling the country servicing financial services companies. A member of the South Plainfield American Legion for most of his life, he held numerous jobs and posts over the years. John was also an avid golfer. He loved to cook and barbecue with friends and family even volunteering at the St Patrick's dinner at the American Legion post for many years. Surviving are his four children, Tamie Zygiel and husband George of Frenchtown, NJ, John Alvenus of Novi, MI, Denise Alvenus of New Port Richie, FL and Glen Alvenus and his wife Kim of North Plainfield; two grandchildren, Samantha and Nicholas Alvenus and cousin, Virgina Mary and her daughter Cara. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 5, 2016 at 10:30AM in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield NJ 07080 followed by burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, 3620 Tilden Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11203. Family and friends may attend visitation on Thursday from 3-6PM in the funeral home.
